What are Inlays and Onlays?

Gallatin, TN Dentist

Inlays and onlays are restorative options that are similar to a dental crown but smaller in size. They can be used to replace fillings, cover areas that have broken or cracked as well as improve the actual look of your teeth. Inlays and onlays are both cosmetic and restorative in nature, since they’re made with high-quality tooth-colored materials. They can last as long as a dental crown without needing repair or replacement.

Why are Inlays and Onlays needed?

These restorations are ideal for most patients and can help to replace areas of tooth that have become compromised. Because they’re made for each individual patient, they are comfortable and fit perfectly. Some of the reasons you may need an inlay or onlay include:

  • You have a large filling
  • You want to replace old metal fillings
  • A tooth has broken or cracked on top
  • You have deep decay

What makes you a good candidate for Inlays and Onlays?

Gallatin, TN Dentist

Inlays sit inside of the cusps of a tooth whereas an onlay lays on the entire top of the tooth in question. Most people who need either of these restorations is a good candidate to have the work done. You’ll come in for a consultation and exam so that we can determine if you’ll need this option. Your new restoration will last for decades once it’s been placed correctly.

What happens during the Inlay and Onlay procedure?

Dentist Gallatin, TN

The first step is to numb the area before we begin any work. We then remove any old filling or decay from the actual tooth and smooth out any ridges or sharp edges. Impressions are taken so that a new inlay or onlay can be made just for you. You’ll come back in to have the restoration placed. We will smooth and file down the inlay or onlay to create a perfect, even fit. If the restoration shows any signs of damage or disrepair, come in so that we can examine it and replace it as needed.

If you need an inlay or onlay or would like to learn more about this treatment option, call our office today and we’ll help to answer your questions.
