What are Dental Crowns?
Gallatin, TN Dentist
Crowns help to enhance your smile and improve the overall functionality of your teeth. If a tooth has broken, cracked or if you’ve had a root canal or a large filling placed, you may benefit from a crown. Essentially, the crown helps to protect the underlying tooth from further damage and helps to enhance the way that you chew and eat. Crowns are made out of either porcelain or ceramic for a long-lasting and durable fit.
Why are Dental Crowns needed?
Dentist Gallatin, TN
Dental crowns are meant to do two things: create a more natural-looking tooth while simultaneously improving oral functioning. Because crowns are made out of high-quality materials, you’ll have a restoration that lasts for decades with proper care. Some of the reasons you’d need a dental crown include:
- A tooth has broken, cracked or fractured
- A tooth has recently had a root canal
- A tooth has a large filling in it
- A tooth has severe gum recession

Who’s a good candidate for Dental Crowns?

The dental crown procedure itself is quick, easy and noninvasive. It can be done in about an hour in our office, leaving you time to get back to your busy schedule. Crowns are ideal for most patients who need them. We’ll perform an exam before the actual procedure to determine if you’d benefit from a dental crown.
What can you expect during the Dental Crown procedure?
Dentist Gallatin, TN
The procedure begins with local anesthetic to numb the area. We then work to file down and smooth the existing tooth. This creates a “seat” for the actual crown to sit on. Impressions are then taken so that we can craft both the temporary as well as the permanent crown. You’ll go home with the temporary crown in place and will be given an appointment to come in for the permanent. The permanent is then placed and smoothed so that it feels and fits comfortably. Your new dental crown can last for years without the need for special care or attention.
If you need a dental crown or want to have an existing one replaced, call our office today and we’ll work to get you in for an appointment.
